Actor Viggo Mortensen played Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings movie series, and he'd be up for returning to Middle-earth someday if the opportunity came along.
Speaking to Collider, Mortensen said he is fascinated by the world that J.R.R. Tolkien created and he believes there are "endless amounts" of stories to be told.
"Yeah, why not? Tolkien, that's a universe," he said when asked if he would be keen to return to if the right offer came along. "There are so many influences. The foundation of his stories is Celtic mythology and history, and Nordic mythology and history, and languages. That's fascinating. There are endless amounts of things you can learn and have fun adapting to the big screen or the little screen."
Speaking about Amazon's big-budget Lord of the Rings show specifically, Mortensen said he doesn't have any inside knowledge about the show about its stories or characters. But he is a fan of director J.A. Bayona and mentioned that the crew might have access to Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, even if he is not officially involved. For what it's worth, Jackson has said he may consult on the project.
"I don't know much about what they're doing. I know [they are] shooting in New Zealand, so I assume they're taking advantage of the people there that have gone through it, especially Peter Jackson and his team," Mortensen said. "I know that it's [J.A.] Bayona who's shooting it, and he's a very good director. That's all I know. I don't even know who's in it. I don't know what angle they're taking on Tolkien, or what the Tolkien Estate is allowing them to shoot. I don't even know. I don't know anything about it, but I'm looking forward to seeing it."
Mortensen is not the only Lord of the Rings veteran who has commented on Amazon's show recently, as Frodo actor Elijah Wood recently said the show has a "very bizarre" title because it takes place during a different time in Middle-earth's history.
