Harmonix roused the rhythm-game faithful in July, after a trademark application for "VidRhythm" surfaced in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database. However, that excitement gave way to confusion, when the Boston-based studio said last month that the project would see release on iOS platforms, and it would be a bit of a misnomer to call VidRhythm a game.
Don't call VidRhythm a "game." Those who'd like to see what VidRhythm actually is can now do so, as Harmonix announced today that the software application is available through Apple's iTunes store for $1.99. The app is compatible with Apple's iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 4th generation iPod Touch.
VidRhythm's concept is to allow users to capture their own video and then mix it with 20 audio samples. Video is recorded on the fly using Apple's handheld devices. Beyond the game's included audio tracks, those with an MIDI-enabled device can import their own songs into the game.
Once recorded, the remixes can be uploaded to social networks such as YouTube and Facebook. Harmonix has set up a YouTube channel to serve as a hub for the shared videos.
