There was a sizable chunk of console gaming news this past week. With the announcement of a new Nintendo Game Boy system and new details being released on Namco's Tekken 3, which looms ever closer to its Japanese release, you had to stay connected if you wanted to stay in touch.
Here's a rundown of the stories that made headlines this week in console news:
The biggest story of the week also came at the end of the week, with the announcement that Nintendo will release a Color Game Boy in the fall. Not simply a new case color, this time the Game Boy's screen will get the color treatment thanks to a low-power color screen from Sharp. The new GB will be released in the US and Japan simultaneously in August.
Also big in console news this week was the unveiling of Tekken 3's Tekken Force Mode, a side-scrolling fighting game (like Final Fight) mode composed of four "stages." Each round ends after defeating a boss, but Namco is still keeping secret the details of exactly what happens after each boss. Be sure to check out the screens of Tekken 3's intro as well.
News on the Nintendo 64DD is scarce at best (and probably will be until at least E3 in May), but this week we caught a glimpse of what the future might be like as we brought you a look at what the system's intro screen might look like.
Nintendo announced this week that LA Laker and All-Star Kobe Bryant will endorse its NBA Courtside title for the N64, as well as other yet-unnamed titles in a multiyear agreement. Courtside hits store shelves April 27. Don't forget to check out new screens of Courtside, too.
Westwood stopped by the videogames.com offices this week, bringing Command & Conquer: Retaliation, which is a collection of the PC add-ons Aftermath and Counterstrike. As we played, we took a bunch of screens and movies for your benefit. If you're a fan of strategy games on the console systems, you'll want to check them out.
Winter may be on its last legs, but Nintendo is going to keep it alive with its 1080 Snowboarding title for the N64. The title was recently released in Japan, and Lauren Fielder immediately jumped on her snowboard to surf Nintendo's 3D mountains. Screens and impressions are inside.
Duke Nukem thinks he's Lara Croft in his latest console adventure, called A Time To Kill. This third-person-perspective action title developed by n-Space brings Duke into a whole bunch of new situations with brand-new abilities. All Duke fans should check it out.
And finally, here are some other stories you should check out if you haven't been checking the site daily:
That's it. Be sure to stick around next week. We might even have a movie of Cloud and Tifa in Ehrgeiz. Later!
