In the company's quarterly-earnings conference call yesterday, Activision revealed its plans to publish a massively multiplayer game set in the Star Trek universe. The as-of-yet unnamed game will be developed by Verant Interactive and is expected to draw nearly 500,000 subscribers, according to Activision. Activision said it plans on charging subscribers of the Star Trek game US$9.95 per month and expects the game to launch sometime in 2002.
Verant is currently developing a massively multiplayer strategy game called Sovereign and is rumored to be in the planning stages of a Star Wars: Episode I multiplayer game as well. Spurred by Activision's Star Trek announcement, we contacted LucasArts PR manager Tom Sarris to find out the status of the rumored Star Wars game. Sarris said that even though "there have been explorations in that area... it would be premature for us to comment further at this time."
Activision will most likely release more details about its Star Trek game as E3 draws closer. We'll keep you updated as more information on either the Star Wars or Star Trek MMRPGs become available.
