The Secrets of Gloomrot update has brought many interesting additions to V Rising, including two new powerful weapons. The Greatsword is one of them, alongside the Dual Pistols, and it’s pretty fun to use. However, you won’t get it during the game’s first hours, as it is tied to a challenging boss, Tristan the Vampire Hunter, which old V Rising players already know well.
He can be pretty scary, but with good equipment, you can beat him and unlock this new weapon and other valuable resources tied to him.
The best solution is to open the V Blood menu by pressing K on the keyboard and tracking his blood. Just follow the highlighted red path, and you will soon locate Tristan. With the Gloomrot update, you won’t have to return to your base and interact with the Blood Alter whenever you want to find a boss. You will always have this handy menu at your disposal.
Once you find him, try to lure him far from the main road to reduce the chances of being assaulted by some enemy patrollers. He walks alone and won’t summon any other foe, so better not to draw the attention of additional enemies. Tristan the Vampire Hunter is fast and heavily relies on his sword to damage you, so be prepared to dash and use defensive spells. Move around him and keep some distance when you see him charging toward you.
He will also rely on magic once you drain some of his health, but these attacks are far more predictable. Don’t let your guard down, however, because you will be significantly damaged if you get hit. Like the other bosses, he will eventually drop some Health Orbs, which you can use to partially restore your health during combat. Just don’t get distracted trying to get them.
Once you defeat Tristan the Vampire Hunter, drink his V Blood to unlock the Greatsword recipe. You will also get the Veil of Frost spell, which lets you dash and elude nearby enemies for a couple of seconds; the Blood Hunger power, which allows you to recognize blood type and quality of nearby units; and the Grater Blood Essence recipe.
It has a great swing radius, so it becomes a valuable resource against groups of enemies. Its Great Cleaver ability lets you dash forward, dealing bonus damage to foes and also launching them in the air for a short time. The Death from Above ability, instead, makes you jump in the air and deal physical damage in the area you land.
