[Updated] EA is Pulling Classic Battlefield Games Alongside Mirror’s Edge From Digital Storefronts-September 2024
Sep 22, 2024 6:29 PM

[Update] After posting our initial story, EA has changed made a change to its blog post, and Mirror's Edge is no longer being mentioned as being delisted from digital stores next month.

[Original story] EA has today announced the sunsetting of several classic Battlefield games alongside 2008's Mirror's Edge.

The news was announced via EA's official blog just now. As of next month on April 28, legacy Battlefield games, including 2008's Battlefield: Bad Company, 2010's Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and 2009's Battlefield 1943 will no longer be available through digital storefronts. As of this date, players won't be able to purchase these titles digitally. The same applies to the original Mirror's Edge from 2009. According to EA, this is in preparation for stopping the online services for these games by the end of this year on December 8. Of course, those owning these classic games can still use their offline modes.

"While these titles hold a special place in our heart, we’re now looking forward to creating new memories alongside you as we shift our focus towards our current and future Battlefield experiences", the EA DICE and Battlefield teams write on the EA blog.

Although undoubtedly disappointing for some, it should be noted that all of these titles were released on the seventh generation of consoles and PC. Then again, it can be argued that a title such as Bad Company 2 still holds up today.

Some years ago, rumors erupted about the original Bad Company being remastered, but in 2020, known journalist Jeff Grubb said that the remaster was canceled.

Many Battlefield fans consider Bad Company 2 the best entry in the series, offering a unique campaign with an excellent mission design. The sequel to 2008's Bad Company was officially announced in 2008. "In Battlefield: Bad Company 2, the ‘B’ company fight their way through snowy mountaintops, dense jungles and dusty villages", the official press release from 2009 reads. "With a heavy arsenal of deadly weapons and a slew of vehicles to aid them, the crew set off on their mission and they are ready to blow up, shoot down, blast through, wipe out and utterly destroy anything that gets in their way."

“Bad Company 2 takes everything that players liked in the original and ups the ante – more vehicles, more destruction and more team play,” said Karl Magnus Troedsson, then Executive Producer Battlefield Franchise, DICE. “Battlefield 1943 is a new take on a blast from the past classic coming to life with brand new technology that we’re eager to get into players hands.”
