Update pushes Tinkmaster into "fun" category, slows down Pagle
Update pushes Tinkmaster into "fun" category, slows down Pagle-February 2024
Feb 8, 2025 5:55 AM

This article was originally published on GameSpot's sister site onGamers.com, which was dedicated to esports coverage.

Tinkmaster Overspark is now a 3/3 (up from 2/2) and now reads: Battlecry: Transform another random minion into a 5/5 Devilsaur or a 1/1 Squirrel.

Tinkmaster is a neutral card that silences and often shrinks big creatures. This reduces the amount of big, fun creatures in the environment. We think this change will increase the amount fun creatures in the environment, and bring him more in-line with his cost and overall power. Tinkmaster should still show up in certain types of decks, but will no longer be appearing in every high level deck.Nat Pagle now reads: At the start of your turn, you have a 50% chance to draw an extra card.

Nat Pagle will now draw a card at the start of your turn rather than at the end. Nat had too much draw power for a card that is fairly hard to counter so early in the game, making it almost an auto-include for many decks. This change reduces the power of the card and gives players more time to counter the card before it starts.Credit: BlizzardWith these changes, Tinkmaster Overspark is clearly being pushed out of the metagame. The wording indicates no restrictions, which means that either player having a board makes his targeting too random to be worth it. He is now more of a fun card, as he was obviously intended to be from the start, as opposed to the silence with a chance of hard removal that he became.

The change to Nat Pagle is less drastic, but likely to be still have a notable impact on his competitive viability. Moving his draw to the start of your next turn was a suggestion that floated around, and effectively gives the opponent an extra turn to deal with the card. This makes him considerably less threatening, especially if played later on. He's still not entirely useless, especially for a class like Druids who run a considerable amount of taunt creatures which can protect Pagle later on, but he is likely to become more of an optional card in certain control decks as opposed to the mandatory potentially game-winning card that he was before.

These very limited changes by Blizzard are in line with their general design philosophy, which tends to make small changes and see how the players adapt around them before making further tweaks. None of the drawbacks of losing the removal power of Tinkmaster or the overall reduction in card draw available have been addressed, with possibly the first expansion set cards being aimed at fixing these issues instead. For the time being however, expect the metagame to move slightly more towards aggro and midgame, with slower decks such as the Giants Paladin continuing to feel the crunch.

The changes also come in clear response to the competitive scene speaking openly about their intent to ban Tinkmaster and Pagle from their tournaments, something which was likely put on hold due to Blizzard communicating with the players about this upcoming patch.

Ladder reset also changed

The update also mentions changes coming to how the ladder resets are handled, although this is not expanded on in any greater detail. The intent is to allow players who achieved a higher ranking during the previous season to start from a slightly higher point in the next season, separating new players from experienced players. The example given states that Rank 2 to Legendary players would begin the following season from Rank 17, sparing new players from some truly disheartening experiences going up against top tier decks at the start of each month as well as cutting a almost a day's grind from the top players' early climbing experience.
