Oct 20, 2024 9:12 PM

[Update] Nintendo finally announced the new Nintendo Switch Mini, which is officially called the Nintendo Switch Lite. It will feature a smaller screen, improved d-pad and no HD rumble. You can find the reveal trailer as well as additional information below.

  Releasing: September 20, 2019

  Price: $199

Comes in three colors (Grey, Yellow, Turqoise)

Does not have detachable JoyCons, can't be docked to the TV

  Has D-Pad!

Nintendo Switch Lite has integrated controls and is smaller than the flagship version of Nintendo Switch. It has no kickstand and, as a dedicated handheld gaming device, does not support video output to a TV. Therefore, it does not come with a dock or HDMI cable.

The new device can play all games in the robust Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode*, although some games will have restrictions. Compatible game modes will be listed on the back of game packaging and in Nintendo eShop.

[Original Story] The Nintendo Switch Mini has yet to be confirmed officially, but Nintendo hinted strongly at the fact that the company is indeed working on it. The specs of the new console have yet to be revealed, but it seems like it will be powered by the new NVIDIA Tegra chip and thus will be able to things that are not possible on the current hardware.

Tirias Research principal analyst Jim McGregor recently talked about the Nintendo Switch Mini specifications, saying that the new Tegra chip will allow the console top to deliver 1080p gaming. The console will also have a better battery life thanks to the new Tegra.

The new “mini” Nintendo Switch will take advantage of a two generations of die shrinks to its Nvidia Tegra processor to deliver 1080p mobile gaming to a broader audience. By joining the joycons to the main body of the Switch, Nintendo will squeeze out the expensive and sophisticated wireless joycons and create a mobile-first Switch platform. The die shrink of the Nvidia Tegra processor will provide better battery life and a meaningful upgrade to a 1080p display and graphics in mobile mode. The new mini Switch, and an upgraded standard Switch are poised to address a broader market and capitalize on their growing software and user base.

It's not clear if this is just speculation, but Tirias Research often works with electronics companies, so it's likely that Jim McGregor possesses some information that has yet to be revealed publicly.
