Unreal Engine 5's Next Game Has Been Revealed-October 2024
Oct 31, 2024 5:24 AM

Fortnite developer Epic Games' new game-making technology, Unreal Engine 5, was shown off recently through an outstanding tech demo running on PlayStation 5. At the time, Epic confirmed that it would transition Fortnite to Unreal Engine 5 in 2021, and now another game being made with the engine has been announced.

The Microsoft-owned inXile Entertainment will use the new technology for its next project to follow Wasteland 3. Writing on Twitter, the studio said it's excited to talk about this game, but it will "be a while" before that happens. "We will indeed be using Unreal Engine 5 for our next project," the studio said.

  Now Playing: Wasteland 3 - "1987" Trailer | X019

Thank you. We’re excited to share more, although it’ll be a while. Focusing on finishing Wasteland 3 and getting it into people’s hands on Aug. 28. We will indeed be using Unreal Engine 5 for our next project.

  — inXile entertainment (@inXile_ent) May 19, 2020

inXile's next game, Wasteland 3, launches on August 28 following a delay. The studio delayed the game due to the "logistical challenges" of working from home during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

inXile's statement that it will be "a while" before it announces its next game suggests it won't happen during the Xbox 20/20 event in July that's focused on first-party games. That makes sense, given that inXile would seemingly want to promote its current project, Wasteland 3, during the event.

Unreal Engine 5 is the latest iteration of Epic's widely used game-making toolsuite. The engine--which promises to deliver photorealistic graphics--will arrive in a preview state for developers beginning in early 2021 before launching for everyone later in the year. The recent tech demo of Unreal Engine 5 was meant to showcase what the technology was capable of, but it was not a game that will be released.
