Unity Acquired Vivox, Provider of Cross-Platform Voice and Text Chat Tools for Games-January 2024
Jan 2, 2025 11:38 AM

Unity announced in a press release its acquisition of Vivox, the provider of cross-platform voice and text chat tools for games. Vivox is used in League of Legends, Fortnite, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Rainbow Six: Siege and World of Tanks to name a few among the 125 games which have integrated the technology, with an estimated 100+ monthly active users.

The company will become a wholly owned subsidiary operating independently from their existing headquarters in Framington, Massachusetts.

John Riccitiello, Chief Executive Officer at Unity Technologies, said:

Vivox and Unity share a common mission: to empower creators and developers with the most powerful and accessible tools and services. The ability for gamers to speak to each other, in real-time, is a requirement in connected games because players want to enjoy great moments together. With Vivox part of Unity, we’re excited to work with the team to make connected communications a seamless integration for devs and develop a future roadmap that takes in-game communications to exciting new places.

Rob Seaver, Founder & Chief Executive Officer at Vivox, added:

It has always been our mission to provide game developers the easiest communications services for their games, regardless of platform, scale, or size. Unity touches more than 3 billion devices worldwide and over half of all mobile games are made on Unity, which means our partnership gives developers across the globe an easy entry point into building the creation of their dreams. We’re thrilled to become part of the Unity team.

Games and experiences made with the Unity engine have reached over three billion devices in 2018 and were installed over twenty-eight billion times in the last twelve months.
