Uncharted Movie: Tom Holland Discusses The Challenging Process Of Finding The Right Director-October 2024
Oct 22, 2024 11:27 PM

Following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland's next big movie is Uncharted, the film based on Naughty Dog's game series that releases in February. In the latest issue of Total Film (via GamesRadar), Holland spoke more about the project, and specifically its revolving door of directors.

Without naming any names, he told the magazine that some directors had ideas that didn't match up with what he and his team wanted, so they got vetoed. Some directors wanted to make a movie that followed the games, others wanted it to be "completely different," Holland said. In the end, it seems the creative team struck a balance. The film doesn't follow the plot of any one game but it appears to borrow elements from past games, including Uncharted 3's cargo plane scene (below).

"Some of [the directors] came in, and had ideas that we didn't like, that just didn't fit the characters, and we had to move on to other people. We took inspiration from everyone. There were very different variations of Drake, and very different variations of Sully," Holland said. "Some people preferred to make the game, some people wanted to make it completely different to the game."

In the end, Sony hired its frequent collaborator, Ruben Fleischer, to direct the Uncharted film. Fleischer previously directed the Zombieland movies and Venom for Sony. Holland said it was "quite stressful" to find the right director for Uncharted, and he isn't keen to revisit that again.

Before Fleischer, six directors came and went for the Uncharted movie, including Travis Knight (Bumblebee), Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), David O Russell (The Fighter), Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses), and Neil Burger (Limitless).

Additionally, a pair of new images from the Uncharted movie can be seen here at GamesRadar.

Uncharted, which also stars Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas, Sophia Ali, and Tati Gabrielle, releases on February 18 in theaters. A new clip was released this week during CES--watch it above.

As for the game series, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection--a new compilation package featuring Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy--comes to PS5 on January 28. Everyone who buys the game gets a ticket to see Uncharted.
