Unboxing and hands-on with the Nintendo DSi
Unboxing and hands-on with the Nintendo DSi-February 2024
Feb 2, 2025 6:09 PM

Three years after the Nintendo original DS, affectionately dubbed the "Phat", we're on the verge of seeing the third iteration of the platform. Taking a page out of Apple's book, the company is using a single lower-case letter in the title. The Nintendo DSi goes on sale in Australia on April 2 for A$299.95 ($209.11). Surprisingly, Australia will be getting the console before it lands in the US and Europe. Some of the new additions that the DSi brings to the table include an integrated 3-megapixel digital camera, as well as a lower-res camera on the inside hinge, an SD card slot, a larger 3.25-inch screen, and a slightly re-worked button configuration. Nintendo Australia was kind enough to give us a DSi to play around with. See the images below to see the differences for yourself.

Nothing too spectacular about the shiny Nintendo DSi box. As you can tell from the colour of the unit on the box, we got a black console.

Just like other consoles, the Nintendo DSi comes with plenty of bed-time material to help you sleep.

For those of you who just want a quick run-down on how to use the console, Nintendo has thankfully included a quick-guide, which covers using the camera and audio player. It also comes with a redeemable code for those who use Club Nintendo Australia.

Packed away beneath the instruction booklets are the console and wall charger.

The bottom of the Nintendo DSi is neat and tidy, just the way we like it.

On the flip-side, there's no branding or logos on the top cover, just the 3-megapixel camera.

Opened up, the layout of the buttons are almost identical to the Nintendo DS lite. The only real changes are the slightly larger screen and the power button, which has been moved to the lower left-hand side of the screen, previously located on the outer edge of the Nintendo DS lite.

As you can see, the power button's new location doesn't take up too much room, nor is it too intrusive.

A side-on view of the SD card slot.

A back shot of the Nintendo DSi. No real changes here, except for the addition of a camera logo on the two shoulder buttons, which can be pressed to take photos when in camera mode.

While the Nintendo DSi may be 13 per cent slimmer than its lite cousin, it is a fairly minute difference.

Side by side with the Nintendo DS lite, the Nintendo DSi is only marginally wider.

Spot the difference? A missing the GBA slot, a moved power button and hinge camera> Otherwise the two consoles are almost identical in appearance.

Just for fun, we put both the Nintendo DS lite and DSi next to an old-skool GameBoy. We certainly know which one we'd pick out of these three, but the question remains: will consumers upgrade to the Nintendo DSi from their existing Nintendo DS lite handhelds?
