Twilight: New Moon director Chris Weitz has revealed that Taylor Swift asked for a cameo in the 2009 film and discussed why he had to reluctantly say no.
Speaking on The Twilight Effect podcast (via The Independent), Weitz said Swift was a "huge Twi-hard," a combination of the words Twilight and die hard, used to describe people who love the vampire series. Weitz and Swift had the same agent at the time, and the agent came to him and said, "Taylor would like to be in this movie--not because of you, but she's a Twi-hard!"
The agent apparently pitched the idea of Swift playing a background character--someone in the cafeteria or diner. "She just wants to be in this movie," Weitz said he recalls the agent saying.
Weitz said he thought Swift--a mega star--appearing in the film would be distracting for viewers, so he shut it down. Now he sort of regrets making that decision.
"The hardest thing for me was to be like, the moment that Taylor Swift walks onto the screen, for about five minutes, nobody is going to be able to process anything," he said. "I kick myself for it too, because--I was like, wow, I could've been hanging out with Taylor Swift."
Weitz said sometimes a director needs to make choices that are "for the best of the film" and this includes saying no to one of the biggest celebrities on Earth. "She must have been like, 'Who is this jerk?'" he said.
