Recent rumors on the Web have been confirmed that the lead programmer for Acclaim's wildly popular Nintendo 64 game Turok, Rob Cohen, has left Iguana in Austin, Texas (the development company responsible for the title). Apparently, Cohen left the company three months ago for undisclosed reasons.
Rob Cohen contacted GameSpot News to confirm that he has indeed left Iguana and formed his own company, Edge of Reality, Inc.
Cohen is pulling together a team of programmers, artists, and designers and has already signed a long-term contract with an unnamed publisher. The publisher is expected to officially announce the deal soon. "You should be able to catch a glimpse of our first project, also to be announced soon, at E3." Cohen said.
To dispel certain rumors, Cohen stated that he was responsible for technical design and not game design when he was lead programmer for Turok. After completing Turok, he built the graphics engine for Quarterback Club '98 and then moved on to enhance the Turok engine for Turok 2. He said that he wished the Turok 2 crew the best of luck.
In a statement released by Acclaim on Tuesday, the company didn't mention Rob's name and said that Turok 2 was on track and that there were "no material changes in the Turok 2 team".
With Turok on Rob's resume, one can expect great things from the Edge of Reality. And considering what's already been see of Turok 2, gamers everywhere are reassured that the game will be worthy of the Turok name.
