While fans will have to wait until March for Anthony Mackie to pick up Captain America's shield in Disney+'s The Falcon and Winter Soldier, Mackie's newest Netflix movie hits the streaming service next month. Outside The Wire is a sci-fi action movie about a drone pilot, played by Snowfall's Damson Idris, who pairs up with Mackie's android character Leo to take out insurgents. Check out the trailer below.
Directed by Mikael Håfström (1408, The Rite), Outside The Wire almost has a Training Day feel to it, with Leo taking in Idris' Harp under his wing to take on heavily-armed militants with super scientific tech weapons. Written by Rob Yescombe and Rowan Athale, who has a career primarily in video game narrative writing, caught the attention of Håfström with their take on the prospect of cybernetic mercenaries.
"It's this kind of close, future around the corner story, I've always liked," Håfström told Polygon. "Certain aspects of the story were things that we hadn't seen yet but that we could sort of imagine if we just took today's technology and pushed it a little bit more forward 20, 30 years or so."
The film also stars Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham, Michael Kelly, and Pilou Asbæk. Mackie also co-produced the movie.
Outside The Wire hits Netflix January 15, 2021.
