Top Gun Maverick Is 12th Movie In History To Make $600M In The US-October 2024

You can't keep a good flyboy down. Deadline is reporting that Top Gun Maverick has officially grossed $600 million at the domestic box office, making it the 12th film in history to do so, in just 47 days. Not a bad feat all things considered, but pre-pandemic, 2019's Avengers: Endgame is the fastest grossing film to hit the $600 million mark in just ten days.

Maverick could also break another milestone. Titanic remains the highest-grossing domestic movie in Paramount Studios' 110-year history but had some help as its re-release put the iconic blockbuster at almost $660 million. It's set to be re-released--and remastered--in early 2023, just in time for Valentine's Day, so that moves that the goal post once again.

The Tom Cruise-driven sequel took over a decade to get made after being announced by Paramount in 2010. Director Tony Scott was slated to return, but died by suicide in 2012, right after a draft for the script had been finished. Maverick was then put on ice for years. While production resumed in 2017 and had an original release date of July 2019, it was setback once again by both shooting complex action scenes and of course the pandemic.

The global box office for Maverick has now grossed $1.1975 billion while still proving steady in its theatrical run. Box office receipts aren't the only good thing going for Maverick, it's been picking up stellar reviews across the board including GameSpot. It's officially the highest-grossing movie ever for Tom Cruise and of 2022 so far.
