Sony Pictures has dropped the first trailer for A Man Called Otto, in which Tom Hanks plays a cranky old jerk in a setup that reminds us of the Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino.
A Man Called Otto is based on Swedish novel A Man Called Ove and is the second film adaptation of the book, following the Swedish movie of the same name released in 2015.
In this new English version, Hanks plays a grumpy, set-in-his-ways widower named Otto. A young family settles in next door and an unlikely friendship sparks. "Experience a funny, heartwarming story about how some families come from the most unexpected places," reads a line from the film's description. As mentioned, this sounds a lot like Gran Torino, in which Eastwood played a curmudgeonly old man who forms an unlikely friendship in his community.
Marc Forster (World War Z, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace) directs A Man Called Otto, which also stars Mariana Treviño (Club the Cuervos), Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven). David Magee, who has earned multiple Academy Award nominations, wrote the screenplay.
A Man Called Otto debuts in select theaters on Christmas Day followed by a wide release on January 13.
