Netflix made a surprise announcement on Wednesday that Tim Burton will be directing with the live-action series Wednesday, a comedy based on The Addams Family member Wednesday Addams.

　　Burton will also serve as executive producer on the eight-episode series. Netflix revealed the new show in a tweet with some promotional art.

　　According to the official synopsis for Wednesday, "The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams' years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Wednesday's attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago--all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore."

　　Al Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Burton and Andrew Mittman for 1.21, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania, and Gail Berman.

　　The news isn't terribly surprising as Burton announced back in October that he wanted to make an Addams Family TV show. Details about the show at that time were scarce. This is Burton's first time directing a full TV series--he did one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents and one episode of Faerie Tale Theatre, both in 1986. Considering Burton's track-record with his dark style, he should be the perfect fit for the Addams Family. Hitchcock's last feature was the live-action reimagining of Disney's Dumbo from 2019, which made $353 million globally.
