These Are President Obama's "Essential" Sci-Fi Movies and TV Shows-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 9:30 PM

United States President Barack Obama has revealed his list of "essential" sci-fi movies and TV shows. The Commander-in-Chief revealed his list as part of his guest-editing duties for the newest issue of Wired.

His selections span a number of decades, starting with Stanley Kubrick's 1968 classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. He also selected Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Carl Sagan's Cosmos (which is not exactly sci-fi). Additionally, Obama said 1977's Star Wars: Episode VI - A New Hope is an essential film, "because it was fun and revolutionized special effects." Obama also had the first seasons of Star Trek on his list, praising the show for being more about "values and relationships" than technology in particular.

Some of Obama's more recent selections included The Matrix and The Martian. You can see Obama's full list of essential movies and TV shows below; the list is in no particular order.
