"There Is No Need For Female Bond," Ana De Armas Says-September 2024
Sep 22, 2024 11:24 AM

Actress Ana de Armas has joined Daniel Craig in believing that a woman should not play James Bond but that there should be bigger, more significant roles for women in the 007 series going forward.

Speaking to The Sun, de Armas said, "There's no need for a female Bond. There shouldn't be any need to steal someone else's character, you know, to take over."

She added: "This is a novel, and it leads into this James Bond world and this fantasy of that universe where he's at."

Instead of a woman playing James Bond, de Armas would like to see women in James Bond films take on more sizable roles.

"What I would like is that the female roles in the Bond films, even though Bond will continue to be a man, are brought to life in a different way," she said. "That they're given a more substantial part and recognition. That's what I think is more interesting than flipping things."

De Armas played Paloma in No Time To Die and had an epic fight scene with Daniel Craig's James Bond. While de Armas doesn't think James Bond should be played by a woman, No Time To Die featured Lashana Lynch playing 007.

Before this, Craig said in an interview that he is not on board with the idea of a woman playing James Bond, but commented that women and people of color should get other roles of a similar stature.

"The answer to that is very simple," he told Radio Times. "There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?"

Earlier, series producer Barbara Broccoli said the next person to play James Bond will likely be a British man of any ethnicity or race.

"I think it will be a man because I don't think a woman should play James Bond," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men's roles. I don't think there are enough great roles for women, and it's very important to me that we make movies for women about women. He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity or race]."

According to Broccoli, the next James Bond movie will be a "reinvention" of the character and is at least two years away from filming.

Outside of the films, Hitman developer IO Interactive is developing anew James Bond game that tells an origin story for the British spy.
