The Worst Godfather Movie Will Get A Much Needed Re-Edit-November 2024
Nov 16, 2024 6:46 PM

Godfather III is universally known as the worst movie in the Godfather trilogy. The film was considered quite a let down--compared to its predecessors--when it released in 1990. However, the film is getting a brand-new edit and coming to theaters and digitally this December under the title The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.

In an announcement from Paramount Pictures, Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter Mario Puzo have restored the film from an original negative to bring it into 4K UHD. In addition, the new edit of the film will envision Puzo's and Coppola's original intentions for the film.

"Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is an acknowledgement of Mario's and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became The Godfather: Part III,” said Coppola in a press release. "For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II and I'm thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it."

The new film will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its release. The Godfather III follows the story of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in his later years. As he gets older, he wants to move away from a life of crime and find someone suitable to run his empire.

"Mr. Coppola oversaw every aspect of the restoration while working on the new edit, ensuring that the film not only looks and sounds pristine, but also meets his personal standards and directorial vision," said Andrea Kalas, senior vice president, Paramount Archives.

And while Godfather III is known as the worst movie in the trilogy, it was still nominated for seven Academy Awards, and that includes Best Picture and Best Director.

The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone's release date for theaters and at-home entertainment platforms will be revealed at a later date.
