A24 has released the first trailer for The Whale, in which Brendan Fraser plays a 600-pound man who is trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter, played by Stranger Things' Sadie Sink.
The movie is directed by Oscar-nominated director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream) and is based on Samuel D. Hunter's stage play of the same name. In addition to Fraser and Sink, The Whale features Hong Chau from HBO's Watchmen.
Fraser plays Charlie, an obese English teaser who is suffering and trying to reconnect with his daughter. "His pain and misery stems from the abandonment and death of his gay lover, leading to chronic binge-eating," reads a line from Variety's description of the film.
The Whale had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, and Fraser earned some of the strongest reviews of his career, with some calling it an Oscar-worthy performance. The movie debuts in theaters in the US on December 9.
Fraser earned a lengthy standing ovation that left him in tears after The Whale first premiered on the film festival circuit. He told Variety, "I was emotional because it was acknowledgment that what we did is making an impact. And that kind of response feels completely new in my professional life."
The Whale is Aronofsky's first movie since 2017's Mother! starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem.
