The Super Mario Bros. Movie hit theaters on April 5, and how did it perform on its first day? According to Deadline, the animated film earned $31.7 million in the US over its first day.

The site reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie could reach $92 million over its first three days (April 5-7) and $141 million for the April 5-9 period.

For comparison, the video game movie Sonic the Hedgehog 2 earned $26.3 million over its first day in 2022, but that film was released on a Friday and the figure also included Thursday previews. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the current record-holder for a video game movie over its first three days with $72.1 million. If The Super Mario Bros. Movie's three-day tracking estimates come true, it will surpass that to set the new record.

Worldwide, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is expected to earn $225 million through Sunday, April 9. The Super Mario Bros. Movie could rise up the charts to become one of the highest-grossing video game movies ever, a list currently topped by Warcraft ($439 million).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario, along with Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Charles Martinet, who voices Mario in the games, has multiple roles in the movie.
