The Suicide Squad is one of the most-anticipated superhero movies of 2021, and now director James Gunn has shared a few more small details about what to expect and get excited about. In an exchange with a fan on Twitter, Gunn said he's very excited to share what Margot Robbie has done with her character, Harley Quinn.
"I can't wait for people to see where Margot has gone with Harley," he wrote. Gunn is also quite enthusiastic about the character Weasel, who is played by Gunn's brother, Sean. "Weasel is really something to behold," James Gunn wrote.

It's hard to choose only one, but I can't wait for people to see where Margot has gone with Harley. And Weasel is really something to behold. https://t.co/ZoLLdMWRAZ

Also on Twitter, Gunn reiterated that you don't need to have seen 2016's Oscar-winning original Suicide Squad film to understand the sequel. "The Suicide Squad story stands on its own, and there is no need to see the first one to know what's going on," he said.
The film features an ensemble cast and numerous characters, and each will be fully developed, according to Gunn. However, the story will understandably narrow its focus down to "some" characters, Gunn said, though he didn't provide any more information.
Yes. I hope all characters are fully developed - and this group of actors was just up & down amazing no matter how much screen time they had - but we definitely spend much more time with some characters than others. https://t.co/gXYYfCmNVg

Gunn also jokingly addressed the possibility of what the next Suicide Squad movie might be called, if it ever happens. "If we do a sequel, it will have to be 'THE The Suicide Squad.' Or maybe 'A Suicide Squad.' I'm done with numbers and am just going to add/change articles from now on," he said.
While 2016's Suicide Squad might have been a critical disappointment, it made $746 million worldwide at the box office and was the 10th biggest film of the year, surpassing Marvel's Doctor Strange. As mentioned, it also won an Oscar--for best makeup and hairstyling.
The original film was written and directed by David Ayer, who has been critical of the changes that were made to Suicide Squad and has said it would be "cathartic" to get to release his own cut.
"It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It's exhausting getting your ass kicked for a film that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The film I made has never been seen," he said.
The Suicide Squad also stars Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, Nathan Fillion, Pete Davidson, David Dastmalchian, and Flula Borg, among others. It releases in August on HBO Max and in theatres.
John Cena's character, Peacemaker, is also getting his own TV series spin-off, which will debut on HBO Max in 2022.
