The Simpson family isn't done with games just yet. GameSpot sister site CNET is reporting that Electronic Arts is developing The Simpsons: Tapped Out for iOS and Android devices. A first look at the new Simpsons game. Photo credit: CNET.

　　According to CNET, Tapped Out--which is set for release "in the coming weeks"--will boast a free-to-play business model and was built with assistance from the television show's writers and voice actors.

　　"We want this to be one of the biggest titles this year," senior vice president of global publishing for social and mobile for EA, Bernard Kim, told the site. "We've invested a lot. It's absolutely a top-tier development priority for us."

　　As for the game's premise, the title begins with Homer causing a nuclear explosion that destroys Springfield (but somehow leaves its inhabitants unscathed). Gamers will be tasked with reforging Springfield in their own way, completing quests and controlling different Simpsons characters in the process.

　　The first character that can be unlocked, according to CNET, is Simpsons first-born daughter Lisa, who will assist Homer in cleaning up Springfield. Supporting characters like Duffman and Moleman will also appear in the game, with new faces to be added after launch.

　　CNET reports the game is universal, in that it is capable of being carried from an iPhone to an iPad and vice versa. Players can purchase the title's virtual money (doughnuts) or they can pick up the currency as they find it scattered throughout Springfield.

　　"People that don't want to pay can still enjoy the title," Kim said. "People who are more impatient can throw a little bit of money at it."

　　The Simpsons: Tapped Out isn't the only free-to-play game based on popular animated Fox programming. Browser-based Family Guy Online is currently in closed beta, although it missed its slated 2011 launch window.
