Star Wars and Star Trek director JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot studio are working on spin-off TV show set in the universe of The Shining as part of his deal with WarnerMedia, but now it looks like it'll find a new home outside of HBO Max. According to Deadline, WarnerMedia and Warner Bros. TV have decided to instead shop the show to a different network.
The site's sources said executives at HBO Max liked the pitch for the show, which is called Overlook, but believed it was "not a fit for them at this time." The show is said to feature "iconic characters" from the Stephen King universe, and that it would dig into "untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction."
As for where Overlook will end up, we don't know yet, but Deadline reported that it's expected to "land at a new home soon." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix might buy Overlook.
The Shining was originally published as a novel in 1977 before Stanley Kubrick made it into a movie in 1980 starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. A sequel book, Doctor Sleep, was released in 2013, and it was adapted into a movie starring Ewan McGregor in 2019.
In 2019, Abrams, Katie McGrath, and their Bad Robot studio reached a $250 million deal with WarnerMedia to develop new projects, including video games. Earlier this year, Bad Robot Games announced that it had raised $40 million to help fund the development of a new AAA IP.
