The Secret Life of Pets was projected to make $95 million in the US during its opening weekend, but it's surpassed that estimate with an impressive total. The talking animals movie hit $103.2 million, which is the highest figure an original animated film has ever opened with in the US.
The next biggest opening from an original animated film came from Pixar's Inside Out, which earned itself a $90.4 million debut weekend. Zootopia follows with $75.1 million.
The Secret Life of Pets was produced by Illuminated Entertainment for $75 million before marketing. Variety reports that this is roughly half of most animated films' budgets.
Illumination's pets movie dethroned Finding Dory from the top spot in the US box office this past weekend. Pixar's latest came in second place with $20.4 million, which brought its total up to $422.6 million to pass Captain America: Civil War's US box office earnings.
