For its Red subscription service, YouTube has ordered original series from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Community creator Dan Harmon, and Jason Bourne producer Doug Liman.
Variety reports that Johnson's new action show is called Lifeline and follows an insurance company that sends its agents forward in time to prevent its clients' accidental deaths.
Harmon's half-hour series goes for a more comedic route, with Game Grumps' Dan Avidan and Arin Hanson (aka Egoraptor) starring. It centers around an esports team that aspires to dominate the competitive gaming world.
Lastly, Liman's series is called Impulse, and it's a sci-fi thriller that focuses on a young girl who can teleport away from imminent danger. Lost's Jeff Lieber is on board to write the hour-long series, and it's set to feature popular YouTubers.
All three series will be available through YouTube Red exclusively, but no premiere dates were announced.
The Rock in Fast & Furious 6The video-streaming site also renewed Escape the Night, a murder mystery series from popular YouTuber Joey Graceffa, for a second season. YouTube's global head of content Susanne Daniels says that despite the influx of new shows, it's not trying to copy Netflix or Amazon in its drive for original series.
"Our goal is to be uniquely YouTube," Daniels said. "And our thesis is simple: Identify YouTube's most engaging stars and top genres, and invest in the content that fans tell us they want. In other words, let our community drive our content."
YouTube Red costs $10 a month and grants subscribers the ability to bypass ads altogether. Users can watch videos offline and in the background as other apps operate, as well as access Google Play Music, a music-streaming service similar to Spotify. However, a Red subscription won't give you free access to YouTube's on-demand content such as its library of paid-for movies.
