The first trailer for The Northman has been released. The latest movie from The Witch and The Lighthouse director Robert Eggers stars Alexander Skarsgård and hits theaters in April.
The movie is set in Iceland during the 10th Century and focuses on a Viking prince named Amleth. The first half of the trailer focuses on Amleth as a boy, living with his parents in a small community. But when his people are attacked by a rival tribe, his father is murdered.
We then see Amleth as a man many years later, played by Skarsgård, who is on a mission of bloody revenge. It looks like a violent and brutal movie, and anyone who has seen either of Egger's previous films will know how good he is at creating an authentic and oppressive period movie. The Northman has an impressive supporting cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe, and Björk. The film arrives in theaters on April 22.
In a recent interview with Collider, Eggers spoke about achieving an authentic look for the movie. "I mean the Viking Age was a thousand years ago," he said. "But, luckily, I was working with the finest Viking historians and archeologists consulting on the film, and many people who are all part of the experimental archeology and living history community. So there's a lot of things that were kind of like what most people agree upon. And then at times you'd have to kind of dig deeper and ask certain questions that maybe they've never asked themselves, because they didn't have to realize everything in three dimensions and play out a scene."
