It’s no exaggeration to say The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is one of the most anticipated Nintendo games of all time, largely because the company has been so stingy with information about the game. Following a Breath of the Wild 2 announcement and teaser trailer in 2019, the game was completely MIA in 2020, but thankfully the drought ended at today’s Nintendo Direct E3 2021 show. This time around we weren't just given another story teaser -- we got a glimpse of actual gameplay, which looks pretty similar to the first BOTW, albeit with some pretty significant tweaks. Check out the footage for yourself, below.
So yes, the big reveal is that Nintendo is expanding the world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild by allowing Link to explore the world above Hyrule in a fashion somewhat similar to Skyward Sword, although there are no loftwings in sight (yet). We also get a peek at some new tools for Link, including a gauntlet that shoots fire and a nifty-looking ability that seemingly allows players to phase through solid items (that should make for some interesting puzzles. Familiar BOTW enemies like Bokoblins and Moblins are seen again, although we also see a handful of new threats. In terms of story, Nintendo once again teases that Ganon is going to be up to his old tricks, perhaps in a more human form this time around, and that something bad might happen to Zelda.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is coming to Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022. Nintendo promises more information will be revealed "in the future." Hopefully, we won't be left waiting too long! What do you think? Excited about the direction BOTW2 is taking? I have to admit, taking to sky wasn't what I was expecting, but I'm eager to get exploring again.
