The Eye of Judgment Update
The Eye of Judgment Update-October 2024
Oct 18, 2024 10:36 AM

We got an updated look at Sony's funky PlayStation Eye-powered card game at its recent press event. We've been excited about the game since we got our first in-depth look at it a few weeks ago. While the version on display didn't show off anything drastically new--the PlayStation Eye and game mat were still a work in progress--there were a few new cards shown off. And despite the incremental improvements to the experience, we still continue to be intrigued by what we saw.

The game was set up in a corner of the games area at the event and allowed up to two people to play against each other. The turn-based game played just like it did the last time we played but with smoother performance and a modest selection of new cards to use in battle. The new cards didn't have final US names yet because the game's Japanese development team was still tweaking them. The cards included new monsters with unique attacks, bonuses, and elemental affinities. While most of the new cards stuck closely to what's been discussed before, others required you to play them in tandem with other cards for a bonus. For example, a new dwarf card offered a boost to your stats when put it into play while a specific ax dwarf card is already on the board.

The Eye of Judgment's presentation is still roughly the same as the last time we saw it, with some refinements to performance. The crisp visuals move a little more smoothly and consistently, with the menagerie of critters and soldiers doing their thing in high-resolution detail. The audio continues to bulk up, with an announcer presenting the name of the cards put into play, as well as offering some descriptive commentary as you play.

Based on the low-key update on display at Sony's press event, The Eye of Judgment is still looking like the coolest-looking card game we've seen in a while. The combat continues to offer an accessible experience to anyone who tries it out. The PlayStation Eye and the game's visual representation both smartly contribute to the game's appeal. The handful of new cards we saw in action also helped highlight the solid amount of strategy used in matches once the combatants start playing at higher levels. If you're looking forward to The Eye of Judgment, this recent update should only serve to fuel anticipation. Look for more on the game in the coming months as its fall release approaches.
