The Chinese Dynasty Warriors film has been in the works for a long time, but it's still happening. The first trailer for the video game adaptation is here, giving us our first look at the unquestionably epic film before its April release date.
The film, simply called Dynasty Warriors, is directed by Roy Chow Hin-Yeung, and stars Louis Koo, Wang Kai, Tony Yang, and Gulnezer Bextiyar. Dynasty Warriors has been in the works for quite a while. Filming wrapped in 2017, and the first trailer for the movie released back in 2018. Dynasty Warriors was meant to come out sooner, but was one of the many films worldwide delayed by COVID-19.
Dynasty Warriors has the heroes of the long-running game series--Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei and more--fighting against Lu Bu. The movie is based (very loosely) on the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, while taking its visuals from the game series, which has the player stepping into the shoes of legendary Chinese warriors and fighting thousands of enemy soldiers in massive battles.
Dynasty Warriors is set to release in Hong Kong on April 29, and Mainland China on April 30. There's no word yet on if or when the movie will make its way westward.
While we're waiting for Dynasty Warriors, we have plenty of video game adaptations coming in the near future and recent memory. Mortal Kombat hits HBO Max and theaters on April 16. The Uncharted movie was in development hell even longer than Dynasty Warriors, but is finally coming in February 2022. Meanwhile, 2020 brought us one of our favorite video game movie adaptations in Sonic the Hedgehog, and a lesser one in Monster Hunter.
