The Disney+ Series The Mandalorian Will Explore The First Order's Origins-October 2024
Oct 20, 2024 4:31 AM

Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced the world to the First Order, a rising force in the galaxy that is very similar to the Empire from the original trilogy. But where did this group come from? Well, during the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, that question will be answered.

While the rebellion decimated the galactic empire at the end of Return of the Jedi, there will always be forces of evil lurking right around the corner. "This doesn't turn into a good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars," Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni explained to Entertainment Weekly. "You get that the Rebels won, and they're trying to establish a Republic, but there's no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. You have in a Western where you're out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes good luck finding one."

Now Playing: Star Wars The Mandalorian Teaser and Sizzle Reel Recap

Filoni knows the Star Wars universe better than most, as he was the supervising director on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the executive producer on Rebels. He's bridged the gap in two different eras, and now, he's doing the same with the time between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens.

He's joined by showrunner Jon Favreau, who is also interested in exploring the Wild West atmosphere during the transition of power. "What could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order?" said Favreau. "You come in on Episode VII, [the First Order are] not just starting out. They’re pretty far along."

In addition, EW also revealed a new image for the upcoming Disney+ series, which features the titular Mandelorian fighting two Trandoshans, which you can see here.

The most notable of all Trandoshans is none other than the bounty hunter Bossk. The character was known for being a mentor a young Boba Fett during the Clone Wars--after his father, Jango, was decapitated. Later, he would appear in the bounty hunter line-up scene in Empire Strikes Back. However, neither of the Trandoshans pictured above seem to be Bossk. The hunter alien race has appeared in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, and we learned they have a hatred for Wookies, many times heading to Kashyyk to capture and kill the furry giants. This group isn't painted in the best light from what we've seen in the past.

The Mandalorian stars Pedro Pascal in the title role, plus Gina Carano (Deadpool), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), and Nick Nolte (Angel Has Fallen). Fans got to see their first glimpse of footage from the film at this year's D23, and that trailer went wide in the days following the event. The Mandalorian will be available at launch on Disney+, on November 12.
