The BioShock franchise is "beloved," Take-Two says-January 2024

When Irrational Games announced earlier this year that it was effectively shutting down, some may have wondered what that meant for the future of the BioShock series. According to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of franchise owner Take-Two Interactive, it sounds like BioShock Infinite won't be the last entry in the series.

"We haven't talked about what's going to happen to the franchise, but it's beloved," Zelnick told GamesIndustry International. "BioShock has sold over 5 million units. Today, the franchise is in hands of 2K. More to come in the future."

The original BioShock was released in 2007, with BioShock 2 arriving in 2010, and BioShock Infinite in 2013. A BioShock game for PlayStation Vita was announced all the way back at E3 2011, though this project has not materialized in any meaningful way. With BioShock Infinite's two-part Burial at Sea expansion now finished, there's no new projects announced for the series.

Also in the interview, Zelnick said Take-Two--which has around $1 billion of cash on hand--has not ruled out the possibility of purchasing a studio. "If there's an opportunity to grow inorganically with a company that's consistent with our disciplined approach, then we would absolutely do so," he said. "There's no question this company is in growth mode."
