As Hollywood has been trying its best to grit down and kickstart moviegoing across the US again, the repeatedly delayed Tenet is offering some encouraging news for those able to safely attend screenings. Christopher Nolan's latest blockbuster, which is also the first blockbuster released since the pandemic struck, has surpassed expectations and earned at least $53 million after debuting internationally in 41 markets over the weekend, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Nolan has remained a staunch defender of movie theaters and the importance of the in-person, big-screen experience for films. Along with Warner Bros., the pair was in lockstep for Tenet not to have a streaming premiere.

Now Playing: John David Washington Says Watching Tenet's Protagonist Is Like A First-Person Shooter
"We are off to a fantastic start internationally and couldn’t be more pleased," said Toby Emmerich, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman (The Hollywood Reporter). "Christopher Nolan has once again delivered an event-worthy motion picture that demands to be seen on the big screen, and we are thrilled that audiences across the globe are getting the opportunity to see Tenet."
You can read our full review of Tenet here, and a spoiler-free review here. You can find a review round-up of what other critics elsewhere think here. The movie currently has 70% on GameSpot's sister site, the review aggregator Metacritic.
Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kenneth Branagh. Until its release, the movie's storyline was wrapped in secrecy. So if you're interested in going fresh and as Nolan originally intended, all we knew before it came out was it's a story about time travel, espionage, and secret agents trying to prevent World War III--or something.
Tenet, which was originally slated for release in mid-July in the US, opened on Friday. It will be released in China on September 4.
