Tears of the Kingdom Looks Gorgeous on PC with Ray Tracing-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 1:03 PM

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom officially launched last Friday on Nintendo Switch, making a big splash in the United Kingdom where it managed to unseat Hogwarts Legacy as the biggest boxed launch of the year, as well as easily becoming the biggest launch ever for a Zelda game in the UK.

Thanks to a pre-release leak that likely sent Nintendo into a DMCA frenzy, PC gamers have been playing it for even longer, though, by way of emulators like Yuzu or Ryujinx.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has since been shown running up to 8K and 60 frames per second on a powerful PC with no problems, and it's even somewhat playable on the Steam Deck. Besides rendering the game at a higher resolution and frame rate, PC gamers can also lean on programs like ReShade to make The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom look even better with the addition of various effects, as showcased in the YouTube video below.

The uploader used a mid-range configuration (i7 11800H, RTX 3070 Mobile, 16GB RAM) and was still able to run the game smoothly at 1440p and ray tracing enabled in the custom version of REVO ReShade 6.0, a preset originally developed for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild by Revolveré.

Given the similarity between the two games, it's no surprise the preset worked in the newest Zelda installment. Still, it's possible that dedicated presets and other graphics optimization mods will be released in the future.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom earned strong critical praise in most reviews. In Wccftech's review (9/10), Nathan Birch wrote:

My Switch gameplay log says I’ve devoted over 60 hours to TotK and I’m sure to sink even more hours into the game, even if I don’t tackle it with quite the rabid enthusiasm at BotW before it. Any concerns that Tears of the Kingdom is merely “Breath of the Wild DLC” is misplaced as Nintendo is offering multiple full AAA games worth of new things to do. There are easily hundreds of hours of content for those who want to explore every nook and cranny of the revamped Hyrule, I’m just not sure everyone’s going to have the stamina reserves for another full tour.
