Super Smash Bros.-Esque NES Game Features Online Play And Rollback-October 2024
Oct 31, 2024 3:19 AM

Hobbyists and enthusiasts making new games for old consoles is nothing new, though their efforts to push these ancient machines to their limits often makes for interesting reading. An NES "demake" of the Super Smash Bros. concept titled Super Tilt Bros. is making the rounds this week, particularly for one notable feature: the simplified fighting game features online play with rollback on NES hardware.

To be clear, the game's online play only works via a web emulator on its Itch.io page at this early juncture, but functioning prototype carts of the game do exist, featuring a Wi-Fi chipset and antenna directly printed onto the chip. The game's code also features a GGPO-esque rollback system, meaning that it attempts to compensate for latency by guessing your opponent's inputs. It's all very complicated, so if you're interested in the details, you should check out the game's dev blog for all the details.
