Valve has introduced Trade Offers to Steam, allowing users to send trade proposals to each other through the Steam Marketplace.
The system works by letting players create trading offers by looking through the public inventory of a friend to create a list of what items are wanted, then detailing what items will be sent in return.
Valve introduced the service with the example of two users bartering over Steam Trading Cards, but the service also works for in-game items from titles such as Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.
While Steam already offers a trading service, trade offers do not require both users to be online and actively participating in the deal at the same time. Upon receiving a trade offer request, a user will be allowed to accept, decline, or send a counteroffer.
The trades can also be made when logged into Steam through a Web browser.
Pending trade offers expire automatically after a two-week period, Valve adds, and the service is restricted to users who are friends with one another. Users who want to opt out of the feature can do so by hiding the contents of their inventory from friends.
