The NPD Group have released their full May sales data, and, as has been the trend this year, it was a record-setting month. Consumers spent $685 million on games and hardware, which is up from $607 million last year, and all three consoles, Xbox One, PS4, and Switch, had their best May ever. Overall, it was the best May for hardware unit sales since 2011.
On the hardware front, PS4 won the month, although the Switch had the best-selling single SKU (the 32GB with neon Red/Blue Joy-Cons bundle). PS4 is 2018’s best-selling console thus far, but clearly all three consoles are doing quite well for themselves.
Moving onto software, State of Decay 2 topped the list, which is somewhat surprising, as Microsoft made the game available via Xbox Game Pass at launch. Interestingly, the more heavily-hyped Detroit: Become Human only came in at #3. Other new additions include Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition at #7 and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection at #17. Meanwhile, April’s God of War stayed strong at #2, while Nintendo Labo dropped right off the list.
