Star-Studded Movie Amsterdam Flops, Could Lose $100 Million - Report-November 2024
Nov 23, 2024 10:11 PM

The new movie Amsterdam, from big-name director David O. Russell and featuring a star-studded cast, has flopped at the box office and could lose a reported $100 million or thereabouts. According to Deadline, the movie was projected to make as much as $15 million this weekend in the US for its opening, but it ended up with just $6.5 million. Worldwide, it's made around $10 million.

The movie stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Rami Malek, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Anya Taylor-Joy, Michael Shannon, and Taylor Swift, among other big names.

Amsterdam had a reported budget of $80 million. Not only did the film not have a strong start at the box office, but reviews weren't exactly positive either--the film has a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 60% audience score--which suggests word-of-mouth buzz won't be too strong.

Deadline reported that Amsterdam stands to lose $97 million when all is said and done. This factors in the estimated $80 million budget and at least $70 million in marketing spending, against a projected worldwide box office gross of $35 million.

The site went on to say that Amsterdam became a very expensive movie due to its change in where it was filmed. The cast didn't want to travel to Boston during the pandemic, when the movie was filmed, so the location changed to Los Angeles, the report said.

This increased the movie's production cost from $50 million to $80 million, the report said, noting that this figure includes a multi-million dollar tax credit from California.

Russell previously directed the movies The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, among others. He has earned five Academy Award nominations over the years. The report said Amsterdam wasn't seen as a payday for the actors involved, with some--like Bale--taking a paycut just to be able to work with Russell.

Head to Deadline to see a further accounting of Amsterdam's box office troubles.
