Starfield boost packs, or jetpacks, as they're often called in other fiction, are integral to exploration. Once you have one such item, you'll be able to glide through the air, zipping around to cover more ground with ease. Our guide discusses how you can make use of these contraptions in the game.
Rank 1 - You can now utilize boost packs.Rank 2 - Using a boost pack expends less fuel.Rank 3 - Boost pack fuel regenerates more quickly.Rank 4 - Doubles the bonuses from the previous ranks. The Boost Pack Training perk is absolutely necessary. We recommend only adding a single point (i.e. just get the rank 1 perk) early in a playthrough, or perhaps even in your full playthrough. That's because all you need is a means of making use of your jetpack. You won't really glide around that often, especially when you consider that many planets have low gravity, and you'll float around anyway.
If you do choose to unlock the whole skill path and "master" it, however, you'll enjoy the benefit of, essentially, flying on some planets, such as those with low gravity. This could eventually allow you to hover over obstacles like enemies and mountainous terrain, but this is totally optional and just one creative way of solving a problem.
Once you've unlocked the Boost Pack Training skill, it's time to make use of Starfield jetpacks. Make sure that you have one equipped. For instance, you'll be given the Constellation Pack upon reaching The Lodge in Jemison as part of an early-game quest.
Then, while roaming around, simply press the jump button while in mid-air. This will power up the boost pack's thrusters, allowing you to glide for a very short period. Naturally, you can press the jump button a few times to continue gliding, at least while you still have enough fuel.
The Constellation Pack is one of the first jetpack-type items that you can acquire in the game, and you'll certainly discover more as you explore. There are four types of boost packs found in Starfield:
Basic Boost Pack - Entry-level, offers no special featuresPower Boost Pack - Fewer but more powerful thrustsSkip-Velocity Boost Pack - More but weaker thrustsBalanced Boost Pack - The "middle ground" between Power and Skip-VelocityWhich you like best will be up to you, though we played the majority of the game with a Balanced Boost Pack and all four skill tiers unlocked, which helped us fly around on many planets.
That's all you need to know about how to use boost packs or jetpacks in Starfield. Don't forget that planets with low gravity essentially let you cover more ground when you float in mid-air. As such, using your boost pack's thrust, even when you're carrying around a lot of items, is a great way to manage over-encumbrance.
