Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker comes to theatres next month, and it is expected to be a gargantuan success at the box office. According to Variety, early box office tracking estimates state that the sci-fi blockbuster is pacing to make between $175 million and $200 million in the US over its first weekend. That is a massive number that would give The Rise of Skywalker one of the biggest domestic openings in cinema history.

　　For comparison, Avengers: Endgame holds the all-time record for best opening-weekend with a record-shattering $357 million in the US. If Rise of Skywalker can make $200 million during its opening frame, it would become just the eighth movie in history to do so.

　　The Rise of Skywalker is still weeks away from release, so these box office estimates might change. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

　　The Rise of Skywalker wraps up decades' worth of storytelling, as it is a conclusion to the Skywalker saga that began back in 1977. The movie is expected to answer a number of lingering questions fans have about the wider lore, though some things will remain a mystery. Also of note is that Carrie Fisher, who passed away before filming started, will appear in the film by way of previously unused footage from earlier entries in the space opera series.

　　The Rise of Skywalker is expected to be far and away the top box office-performer when it opens, but it's not the only new movie opening on December 20. Universal's Cats movie based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway show is also premiering on that day. It's a star-studded feature that should be a major box office draw as it stars a long list of big names such as Taylor Swift, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, and Jason Derulo.
