The Star Wars franchise and the video games industry have had a long and profitable relationship ever since the release of the first games based on the sci-fi franchise created by George Lucas. Things have only improved over the years thanks to titles like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a solid action-adventure title that proved how Respawn Entertainment, a studio better known for multiplayer titles like Apex Legends and the Titanfall series, is more than capable of developing compelling single-player titles.

Having sold surprisingly well, it was no surprise to learn that the studio was working on a full-fledged sequel called Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Here's everything you need to know about Cal Kestis' next journey into a galaxy far, far away.

Release Date, Platforms, Editions

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was initially scheduled for a March 17th release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, but the game was eventually delayed to April 28th, 2023 to allow developer Respawn to reach the quality bar they set for their title. Unlike its predecessor, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will not release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One due to technical reasons, as the developer wouldn't have been able to realize its vision on the weaker hardware of the previous generation consoles.

At launch, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be available in three different editions. The Standard Edition, available for $69.99 and €69.99, will include a copy of the game and the Obi-Wan Kenobi-inspired Jedi Survival Pack, including the Hermit Cosmetic, Hermit Lightsaber Set, and the Combustion Blaster Set.

The Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Deluxe Edition, which will be available for $89.99, €89.99, will include a copy of the game, the same pre-order bonuses of the Standard Edition as well as the Galactic Hero Cosmetic Pack and the New Hero Cosmetic Pack, which include new outfits for Cal, new skins for BD-1 and new Blaster and Lightsaber skins, respectively.

The Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Collector's Edition, priced at a hefty $299.99, will include all of the bonuses featured in the Deluxe Edition as well as a full-size replica of Kal's lightsaber, a Premium Magnetic Box, an Official Steelbox and a Certificate of Authenticity.

Setting, Genre, Mechanics

Being a direct sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will star former Jedi padawan Cal Kestis again as he attempts to continue staying one step ahead of the Empire's Inquisitors who are on the hunt for all Jedi, as ordered by Emperor Palpatine with his Order 66. Five years have passed since Cal's battle against the Second Sister, and the Jedi has grown since, having had to be on the run for so long. His new tale will be darker than before, but he will have plenty of new abilities at his disposal to deal with the hardships ahead, such as five lightsaber stances - Single, Double, Dual Blades, Cross Guard, and Blaster, and an enhanced mastery of the Force that will allow him to slow blaster shots in mid-air or control enemies to make them fight at his side.

At its heart, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's basic gameplay formula won't be much different from that seen in its predecessor, as third-person action combat and exploration will be masterfully interwoven to make players feel like a true Jedi. Just as combat has been expanded with many new options, which will finally let Cal dismember those pesky Stormtroopers and other human enemies, so has exploration. During the game, Cal will explore several different planets, including the untamed wild planet Koboh, all coming with unique biomes and secrets to discover, secrets that this time around will be more than simple cosmetics like in the first entry in the series. Exploration will be made more convenient and rewarding as well with the introduction of rideable mounts, fast travel, and enhanced puzzles, as those seen in the Zelda: Breath of the Wild-inspired Jedi Meditation Chambers.

PC System Requirements, Console Display Modes

As Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is skipping PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, the game's PC system requirements are higher than its predecessor's, though still not particularly demanding compared to other recent games. On PC, the game is an AMD Partnered Game and will come with FidelityFX Super Resolution and FreeSync Premium Pro support. It will be sold via the EA app, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
