Star Wars Jedi Director Promises Challenging Combat, Compares Game to Metroid, Dark Souls-September 2024
Sep 21, 2024 9:53 PM

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was finally revealed prior to E3 2019, and reaction to the game’s debut footage has been mixed. Some have singled out the combat, saying it looks one-note or easy, others have complained about the game’s rather linear-looking level design.

Some of Star Wars Jedi’s shortcomings, like a lack of dismemberment, are unlikely to change, but according to the game’s director Stig Asmussen, a lot of criticisms are misplaced and the result of fans only getting to see a small chunk of gameplay. What was shown at E3 was specifically crafted to show how empowering combat can be, with the final product being more challenging…

For the first-look, it was critical to present a focused 15 minutes of raw, in-game footage highlighting lightsaber gameplay that speaks to the Jedi fantasy in an empowering way. But it should not be mistaken that our combat is overpowered or easy.  I promise there is considerable challenge and depth to be found within our combat system.

Asmussen also provided some more details about Star Wars Jedi’s world and structure, comparing the game to Metroid, and even Dark Souls.

The same can be said about our approach to level design, which is crafted in a non-linear way with heavy influences from games like Metroid, Castlevania, and the Souls series.  The game will feature several planets that the player can elect to travel to via starship.  On these worlds unique abilities and upgrades can be found that open up new paths across other planets, making re-traversal an essential part of the gameplay experience.

EA recently released an extended version of the Star Wars Jedi E3 demo, which provides a bit more context. You can check it out, below.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order hits PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on November 15.
