Star Wars Episode 8: Here's How They Tried to Prevent Leaks-January 2024
Jan 12, 2025 6:58 PM

Star Wars actor Mark Hamill can't talk about the story of Star Wars: Episode VIII, but that doesn't mean his mouth is totally shut about the upcoming sci-fi film. In an interview with Polygon, Hamill discussed the tight security that was in place at filming locations to prevent details from leaking.

"Man, I can't say anything about anything. It's like working for the CIA," Hamill said. "You get your pages in the morning, and they take them from you as you walk so they can shred them before it somehow leaks. You have security lines you have to walk through, both to and from set."

Hamill also said he had to wear a "big monk hood" over his costume when walking around the set to ensure that camera-equipped drones couldn't see what he was wearing.

Also in the interview, Hamill said he was "surprised" by the strong reaction that his role in Episode VII received, though he did not elaborate further.

Episode VIII finished shooting in July, though it's possible reshoots will happen. The movie is directed by Rian Johnson, who made Looper.

Earlier this year, Johnson talked about how Episode VIII is the movie where "we start zooming in on the characters and getting to the heart of them, challenging them, and pushing them deeper."

This matches up with what Poe Dameron actor Oscar Isaac said in May.

"In the new film, there's a lot more to do. What happens now is the heroes get tested. All three of them get tested immensely," he explained at the time, adding the film is "dark," but "not really dark."

Stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega have also spoken about the film's darker tone. "It's a different take--darker, bigger," Boyega told Variety. "Someone will say: 'How do you get bigger than Force Awakens?' But it's crazy."

Following a delay, Episode VIII arrives in theaters on December 15, 2017. It also stars Adam Driver, Laura Dern, Domhnall Gleeson, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis.

Star Wars fans don't have to wait until 2017 to see a new entry in the series, as spinoff movie Rogue One comes out this December. You can watch the newest TV trailer here.
