While the future of Star Trek on the big screen is currently unknown, the long-running sci-fi franchise continues to thrive on TV. There are several new shows in development, and it has now been announced that Star Trek Discovery will return for Season 3. A release date, however, has not yet been shared.

CBS confirmed that Discovery has been renewed for a third season, and that fans in the US can once more view it on the subscription channel CBS All-Access. Star Trek Discovery is currently halfway through its second season, with Episode 7 due this week. The current season has seen the show incorporate several classic Star Trek characters, with Captain Christopher Pike in command of the Discovery and Spock set to appear later in the season. For more, check out GameSpot's guide to all the Discovery Season 2 Easter Eggs so far.

There are several other Star Trek shows also in various stages of development. Next Generation star Patrick Stewart is set to reprise his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard in a new show that focuses on the character after the dissolution of the Romulan Empire. That show is expected to premiere on CBS All-Access later this year.

Beyond that, a Discovery spin-off starring Michele Yeoh as Terran Emperor and Section 31 agent Philippa Georgiou is in the works, as is a teen-orientated show titled Starfleet Academy. There's also a new animated Star Trek comedy titled Lower Decks in development from Rick and Morty's Mike McMahan.
