Star Trek Beyond Review Roundup
Star Trek Beyond Review Roundup-December 2024
Dec 21, 2024 1:05 PM

Fast and Furious director Justin Lin continues JJ Abrams' rebooted Star Trek series with Star Trek Beyond. Despite the change in director, it stars the same cast from the previous two films: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Jon Cho, and the late Anton Yelchin.

Beyond introduces a new villain, Krall, played by Pacific Rim actor Idris Elba. "You've never seen me play a character like this," Elba said in an interview with MTV. "I think Star Trek has prided themselves as being quite classic when it comes to villains, like 'He's a guy who wants to end the world,' there's no doubt about that. But in this version of the film, there's a slightly different twist to that."

You can find out what Elba is talking about when Star Trek Beyond opens in North American theaters on July 22. We've collected a selection of reviews from around the internet and brought them together below. For a wider view of the critical reception, visit GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

GameSpot

"Beyond tries not to retread old ground, and its resulting tone and high moments can feel unexpected. The film shirks a number of Star Trek reboot tropes, and there are moments that feel more like Guardians of the Galaxy than Star Trek. But the time spent with the Enterprise crew on this fun, lively adventure still feels valuable, leaving you eager to see them get back on deck to search the galaxy for more escapades like it." -- Edmond Tran [full review]

Variety

"What is forgettable, perhaps, is everything else about the movie, which doesn't so much advance the Trek cosmology as keep it running in place. ... You can rest assured that this team will become a team again, because that's the message of the movie: that in space (or maybe anywhere), a crew of quirky oddballs beats a scaly megalomaniac every time. But that's kind of a lesson that we already knew. Star Trek Beyond is a somewhat diverting place holder, but one hopes that the next Star Trek movie will have what it takes to boldly go where no Star Trek movie has gone before." -- Owen Gleiberman [full review]

Gizmodo

"It's really hard to recover from a bad ending, since that's the last thing people see before leaving the theater. On the other hand, the middle of the movie is really engaging. There are a ton of small references for old-school fans to notice and appreciate, but nothing any new fan would find confusing. There's an attempt to make a deeper point about humanity that is clumsily executed, but shows more thought than the last two movies gave. I'd see it again, and go to the bathroom during the final battle. In a summer where none of the franchises have delivered perfect products, Star Trek Beyond gets closer than most." -- Katharine Trendacosta [full review]

The Hollywood Reporter

"While Beyond won't unseat 1982's thrilling The Wrath of Khan as the gold standard for Star Trek movies, it's a highly entertaining entry guaranteed to give the franchise continuing life." -- David Rooney [full review]

The Guardian -- 3/5

"The dilithium crystals powering the new Star Trek film are in pretty good shape: it motors along and Chris Pine shows himself again to be a very good actor with easy charm and authority. The bantering relationship between Karl Urban (as Dr 'Bones' McCoy) and Quinto is, as ever, very enjoyable. At one stage, McCoy dismisses something Spock says as 'horse****.' Quinto demonstrates great comic timing in the pause he deploys before his dignified reply: 'I fail to see how excrement of any kind plays a part.' Maybe this is the real bromance, actually." -- Peter Bradshaw [full review]

Empire -- 4/5

"Those concerned by the hiring of Lin to replace Abrams need not be. Yes, he is the man who revitalized the Fast and Furious franchise by taking it in a gloriously [over-the-top], ridiculously stupid direction, but here he dials down that freneticism for something more considered. It's relatively low on the explosions front, and there are whole scenes here where the camera doesn't move. But when the action starts, he's more than capable of handling it, most notably in the bravura extended sequence when the Enterprise is ripped to shreds by Krall's seemingly unstoppable swarm of bee-like ships. And throughout it all, there's a lovely reverence for the legacy of Trek. Chances are this rose won't be losing its bloom anytime soon." -- Chris Hewitt [full review]

The Wrap

"Without a TV series to bridge long gaps between movies, each new Trek film has shouldered the burden of being many things to a large and varied fanbase. Star Trek Beyond forges a path right down the middle of the franchise's well-defined lane, playing more like a greatest-hits compilation than anything new. Given the various low points in the 13-film series, that's not a bad thing." -- Russ Fischer [full review]
