Star Citizen never coming to Xbox 360, PS3-November 2024
Nov 14, 2024 10:59 AM

Star Citizen is first and foremost a Windows PC game that will never be "dumbed down" for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, creator Chris Roberts said today in a post on the game's website.

His post addresses outcry from fans regarding a photo of a PlayStation 4 devkit sitting on the desk of Cloud Imperium Games CTO Jason Spangler. Some fans thought this meant the game had switched to a console release, but Roberts said this is not the case.

"Star Citizen is a PC game. It will never be dumbed down for a lesser platform," Roberts said. "We will not limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will not pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations."

"The PC platform is great because it isn't static. It doesn't have rules or some controlling entity that decides what will and won't be in the ecosystem," he added. "Because of this Star Citizen will always be primarily a PC game and will embrace the best and newest tech."

Roberts went on to say that while Star Citizen will never be released on Xbox 360 or PS3, he remains "open" to bringing the game to Xbox One and/or PlayStation 4, though he has not current plans to do so.

"If the platform holders (Sony & Microsoft) allow us to update the code and data without restrictions and odious time consuming QC procedures, if they allow our community to openly interact with each other across platforms then I would consider supporting them," he said.

Why potentially support next-generation consoles if Star Citizen is a PC-focused game at heart? First, Roberts said it would allow the game to have a wider userbase. What's more, both systems are attractive because they are "essentially inexpensive small form factor PCs with a custom operating system focused on gaming," he said.

Roberts gave Sony more credit than Microsoft, saying the PlayStation maker seems to be the "most eager embrace indie games and the idea of openness." Sony even sent Cloud Imperium Games PS4 devkits, though Roberts said the developer has been "very clear" with Sony on what it would take for Star Citizen to come to PS4.

"We are shooting for the stars both virtually and technology wise. For me this game is about pushing boundaries on all levels and is something that I hope is still breathing strong ten years from now," he said. "Instead of Crysis benchmarks when they test a new GPU I want to see Star Citizen!"

Lastly, Roberts said he has no inclination to "sell out" to a console platform in that way that he said Bungie (Halo) and Epic Games (Gears of War) did when agreeing to release games only on the Xbox platform.

"Thanks to everyone that has backed Star Citizen we have no need to sell out to anyone! You've funded a AAA PC game that will compete with the biggest and best," Roberts said.

Star Citizen is the most successful crowdfunded project in history, having gathered over $27.7 million to date. The game is expected to launch next year.
