In a recent interview conducted by Famitsu magazine, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada spoke about the future of the new company. When asked about the work that is currently being done by the company, Wada said that the company is focusing on the localization and debugging of games currently scheduled for release after April and the development of tools that it make it easier to enable PlayOnline content. He also said that Square Enix has plans for an original game in 2004. "Both [Square's and Enix's] developers are talking about it little by little," he said. "There was actually an idea for a project which came up after discussions on both sides, and there's already a project proposal written for it. But I stopped it since it's a little bit too early. It reminded me again of how talented and flexible the developers in Square Enix are. Both companies are now working under the same roof, so they'll naturally be interacting with each other more often. I'm sure that there will be more project proposals popping up. There's nothing in particular that's going in development right now, but if everything goes well, there should be an original title coming out in the next fiscal year."
Since the two companies were such strong rivals for several years, Wada was also asked who they saw as being the new rival. "From now into the future, I think our rival is entertainment outside of video games," he said. "There's currently a dispute on how to tie entertainment like anime, Web, and movies together. But we will have to contend with all those kinds of media from now on. The fight will be even more severe than before, but I am sure that the developers in Square Enix will beat the competition."
