Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider publisher Square Enix on Thursday announced financial results for the quarter ended June 30, and the company's performance was strong.
Overall revenue jumped 12 percent to ¥42.2 billion, up from ¥37.8 billion during the same quarter last year. Profit rose by an even healthier 76 percent, jumping from ¥3.4 billion to ¥5.9 billion for the latest period.
The company's dedicated game unit, called Digital Entertainment, posted net sales of ¥30.3 billion, up 29.2 percent compared to last year. Operating income, meanwhile, was ¥8.2 billion, a huge jump of 81.6 percent year-over-year.
Square Enix attributed the positive results in part to strong performance from PC and mobile games such as Sengoku Ixa, Dragon Quest Monsters Super Light, Schoolgirl Strikers, Final Fantasy Record Keeper, and Kai-ri-Sei Million Arthur. These games "continued to ride high," Square Enix said.
In addition, expansion pack sales for Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X enjoyed "favorable" sales.
For Square Enix's home console business, total new game sales fell compared to last year. However, catalog sales, mainly through digital channels, "gained favorable results," the company said.
This week at Gamescom, Square Enix revealed exciting new details for Final Fantasy XV and also confirmed a 2016 release date long-in-development game. The publisher also shared more information about Rise of the Tomb Raider, including a tease for a sequel.
